The Coastal Golf Studios Guide
Designing a golf simulator starts with one question:
Will it fit the space you already have?
The good news — most homes in the Myrtle Beach and greater coastal region do have rooms that can work.
The key is understanding ceiling height, swing clearance, and projector geometry before you choose equipment or begin building.
This guide will walk you through exactly what you need to measure—and what to watch out for—so your simulator not only fits your space, but actually feels great to play in.
The Three Critical Measurements
To determine whether a room will support a simulator setup, you’ll want to measure:
-
Ceiling Height
-
Room Width
-
Room Depth
Each one plays a different role in how comfortable and realistic your simulator will feel.
1) Ceiling Height
For most golfers, the ideal ceiling height is:
➡️ 9 feet or higher
This height allows a full swing with fairway woods and driver without changing your motion.
| Ceiling Height | Realistic Result |
|---|---|
| 8’0″ – 8’6″ | Works for irons and wedges; drivers may feel restricted |
| 9’0″ – 10’0″ | Ideal range — comfortable with all clubs for most people |
| 10’+ | Excellent for tall golfers and high swing speeds |
If you’re a taller player (6’2”+) or a long driver, your swing arc may require additional clearance.
This is where careful hitting position alignment and offset tee placement become important — and that’s something we design intentionally in every studio.
2) Room Width
Room width determines how centered you stand relative to the target line, which is important for ball flight realism.
For most home installations:
➡️ 12 feet wide is a comfortable minimum
➡️ 14–16 feet allows centered tee position (ideal for both right & left-handed players)
If you plan to host multiple golfers or teach lessons, it’s worth maximizing width so nothing feels cramped or forced.
3) Room Depth
Room depth determines:
-
Hitting position to screen distance
-
Launch monitor placement
-
Projector throw distance
-
Safety clearance behind you during the swing
You’ll want a minimum of:
➡️ 18 feet from wall-to-wall
This typically breaks down as:
-
8–10 ft from ball to screen
-
6–8 ft from ball to back wall
-
Projector throw distance layered into that footprint
If you have more space (20–24 ft), it allows for multi-sport mode, larger turf transitions, and more cinematic viewing angles.
What If Your Room Is Smaller?
Not every space needs to be “perfect.”
Many Myrtle Beach area homes and garages can work beautifully with creative layout solutions, including:
-
Offset tee positioning
-
Slim framed enclosures
-
Short-throw projector mount strategy
-
Low-profile turf build-outs
This is where custom design makes a difference.
Garage Conversions
Garages are one of the best starting points:
-
Plenty of depth
-
Flexible mounting options
-
Easy to integrate turf and mats
-
Minimal disruption to living areas
And in the Conway, Little River, and North Myrtle Beach areas, garages often have the ceiling height required for drivers.
For Tall Golfers & High Swing Speeds
If you or someone in your household:
-
is taller than 6’2”,
-
plays stiffer shafts,
-
or generates ball speeds over 165 mph,
then ceiling height and enclosure geometry matter even more.
We build simulator studios for golfers who need space to swing freely — no compromised motion, no guarded swings.
Before You Decide on Equipment
There is no universal enclosure size.
The right setup depends on your room’s measurements — not the other way around.
A room that feels cramped on paper can play beautifully with the right:
✔ Hitting position
✔ Impact screen sizing
✔ Projector lens + throw mapping
✔ Turf and stance mat orientation
✔ Launch monitor offset configuration
This is where we specialize.

Closing Thought
A golf simulator isn’t just practice equipment.
It’s a space you’ll spend time in, share with friends, and enjoy.
When the room is designed correctly, it feels natural—like it has always belonged in your home.
